The latest UK grocery market share figures from TNS Superpanel show that Tesco's growth continues apace. The supermarket has increased sales by 11% over the last year, taking its market share from 28.1% to 30.4%.
Asda's share has increased compared with the same period the previous year (16.6 % for the 12 weeks ending July 17th 2005 versus 16.5 % for 12 weeks to July 18th 2004), halting its declining sales, although close rival Sainsbury's has made ground on it. The Asda turnaround may be partly driven by increased levels of price promotional activity.
Market share for the newly merged Morrisons and Safeway has fallen, as stores have consolidated and some Safeway stores have been sold. The Somerfield group, which has acquired many of the smaller Safeway stores, and which also includes Kwik Save stores, has marginally increased its share, up from 5.7% to 5.8% year on year.
Waitrose sales are also up by 18%, and discount store Netto, with just 0.7% of the market, has seen a 14% increase in sales. The two largest discount supermarkets, Aldi and Lidl, have seen growth figures of 3% and 5% respectively. While these are ahead of the overall marketplace growth (2%), they indicate a slowdown in performance.
The findings come from TNS Superpanel, a continuous consumer panel that provides purchasing information on all main grocery markets. The panel, launched in 1991 and now consists of 15,000 households which are demographically and regionally representative of the UK market place.
