RI Uses RFID to Track Australia's Mail

October 27 2005

Australia Post has picked Research International (RI) to monitor its delivery of letters using radio frequency identification device (RFID) technology, together with more traditional end-to-end measures. The company has been using RFID to measure its international mail services for the past two years.

The use of RFID can provide more detailed tracking, with intermediate measurement points throughout a letter's journey to highlight any problems. RI has 17 years' experience of postal measurement systems in other countries, and has been incorporating RFID into these systems for the last seven years.

Monitoring technology, supplied by Lyngsoe Systems, will be installed in all 10 Australia Post metropolitan letter-processing facilities, as well as 21 country mail centres, and 23 of the larger delivery centres around Australia. To diagnose problems in other and more remote parts of the network, RI will also use 16 mobile units.

As part of the new contract, which begins in January, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu will provide quarterly and annual independent audits of Australia Post's service performance.

Louise McCann, CEO of RI in Australia, says the use of RFID will 'make a real difference to Australia Post's ability to identify opportunities to further streamline performance'.

RI is online at www.research-int.com.
