Abt Hires Health and Economy Experts

December 19 2005

US-based Abt Associates has appointed Dr Jamie Banks as Director of Outcomes Research in the company's Health Economic Research and Quality of Life Evaluation Services (HERQuLES) team. Dr Stephen Bell, an expert in analysing the effects of social programs, also joins the company, in its Social and Economic Policy (SEP) Division.

Banks has several years of consulting experience in the global pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries. Most recently, she was MD of Health Outcomes Strategy Group and Cambridge Outcome Research Associates, providing outcomes research, patient-reported outcomes assessment, health economics, market strategy, pricing and reimbursement policy, clinical trial design, and other services.

Previously, she was founder and President of Strategic Technologies, a research publications firm that produced analysis of healthcare markets and strategic issues influencing the development of new medical products.

Chris Pashos, Head of HERQuLES, says of Banks: 'Her technical excellence and knowledge of the global healthcare marketplace will help us continue to build our portfolio of services related to patient-reported outcomes assessment and strategic reimbursement services'.

Bell has worked as a Principal Research Associate at The Urban Institute for the last nine years, following a previous spell at Abt Associates as a Project Director, responsible for evaluating the labor-market effects of job training and employment programs.

In his new role, he will continue in his established role as lead methodologist for the National Head Start Impact Study (NHSIS), an evaluation of early childhood development assistance as an anti-poverty strategy.

Bell also joins the Abt Associates Fellows, a group of senior researchers who aim to assess and enhance the quality of the company's work.

Katie Heintz, VP for the SEP Division, says: 'Steve is highly respected in his field and significantly bolsters our capacity to take on random assignment evaluations. We couldn't be happier to have him back at Abt Associates.'

The company is online at www.abtassociates.com.
