Research on Research: PPM Workings Probed

January 11 2008

In the US, media research firm Coleman Insights is launching a series of studies to examine how Arbitron's Portable People Meter (PPM) reports the responses of radio audiences to different programmes.

The results of the studies will be published in reports called 'Mapping the DNA of PPM', which the firm says will provide the most comprehensive look at PPM to date. Four of the studies will be released during the year, with the first issued as a free download to the industry later this month.

'The series will be based on extensive reviews of the huge quantity of data generated by PPM,' explained President Jon Coleman. 'Since there is a high level of uncertainty when PPM comes to a market, we will help ease some of that anxiety with real information on how listeners respond to different programming elements.'

Founded in 1978 to provide research into the radio industry, the firm is headquartered in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, with offices in Los Angeles and Hamburg, Germany; and is online at www.colemaninsights.com.
