Verispan Acquired by Healthcare Analytics Firm

July 30 2008

In the US, healthcare data products and analytic services firm SDI has acquired pharma information provider Verispan. Terms were not disclosed.

Verispan provides a range of information products and services including market research; healthcare profiles; data integration; and data analysis. Based in Yardley, Pennsylvania, the firm employs nearly 500 dedicated healthcare information professionals, and recently launched its Retail Clinical Database, providing details of pharmacy retail clinics and the healthcare practitioners associated with them.

SDI says the takeover will allow it to integrate its own customer patient-level data analytics with Verispan's syndicated patient-level data and audit-based analytic solutions; healthcare lists and profiles; and marketing services. In addition, it will expand both companies' customer base and market penetration, and will enable the company to respond to changing market needs.

'The acquisition is an important element of our growth strategy, and it extends our ability to meet client needs throughout the entire spectrum of healthcare data and analyses,' said Andrew Kress, CEO of SDI. 'We consider this an important milestone toward our goal of continuing to deploy innovative next-generation healthcare analytic products and services.'

Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania-headquartered SDI was founded in 1982. Web sites: www.sdihealth.com and www.verispan.com .

Verispan CEO Wayne Yetter will manage the transition, but SDI says he will 'take advantage of other oppotunities' once this is completed, when Kreiss will take charge of the firm. Very few redundancies are planned and all current locations will remain open.

Along with IMS Health and Wolters Kluwer Health, Verispan has been fighting the introduction by several states of laws banning the use of physician prescribing information for marketing purposes, and the trio recently halted the District of Maine's Prescription Restraint Law.
