Online Population Hits One Billion

January 26 2009

For the first time, the number of people worldwide aged 15+ using the Internet in a single month has passed the one billion mark. Online audience measurement firm comScore says the milestone was passed in December.

The firm measured both home and business online traffic, but excluded those accessing through Internet cafes and mobile phones or handheld devices.

China represented the largest online audience in the world with 180 million Internet users, followed by the US (16.2%), Japan (6.0%), Germany (3.7%) and the UK (3.6%).

comScore President and CEO Magid Abraham said that this milestone was a significant landmark in the history of the Internet: 'The second billion will be online before we know it, and the third billion will arrive even faster than that, until we have a truly global network of interconnected people and ideas that transcend borders and cultural boundaries'.

Google web sites attracted 777.9 million visitors representing 77% of the total worldwide Internet audience, while Facebook.com was the most popular social networking web site and the 7th most popular web site in the world.

comScore is online at: www.comscore.com .
