Google Adds Time-Shifted Data

January 30 2009

Google's platform for TV advertisers is to offer new time-shifted viewership data, showing how and when viewers see commercials in recorded programs.

Google Continues in Nielsen TerritoryThe search giant will add five new categories to its live data: live plus same day, live plus one day, live plus two days, live plus three days, and live plus seven days. The additional information will reportedly be available to Google Adwords TV advertisers free of charge.

Google TV Ads gets the data from its arrangement with Dish Network, where it sells advertising time and receives information from millions of set-top boxes, giving it, it says, a more accurate sample of users' notoriously fragmented DVR viewership.

Preliminary findings indicate that the new ratings will be good news for niche programming, which tends to get a disproportionate percentage of its viewing through time-shifting, according to Google: 'Without DVR, smaller networks would have a more limited audience.'
