Band Metrics Tests Music Industry Tool

February 13 2009

Online music intelligence platform Band Metrics is testing a web application that aims to collect, analyze and display popularity and trends data for musicians and bands.

The semantic web application is in private beta test, but about to go public. It promises to help musicians understand their reputation by aggregating online information about how many times their music has been played, purchased or shared across various social networking and blog sites.

Among its claims is that it will help bands fine-tune their music based on fan-feedback, while enabling them to select cities to tour based on where fans are located. The firm also maintains that musicians will eventually be able to use the application to conduct trend measurement, sentiment analysis, and reputation management studies.

Band Metrics' Founder and President, Duncan Freeman, commented: 'We think this will be a great solution for independent artists to understand the drivers of their music's popularity and their fans' sentiments, while also helping artists manage their digital identities.'

So far, the tool has been used to analyze nearly seven million bands and 1.3 million songs.

Last month, music industry financing platform Slicethepie launched a web-based consumer insight and music analytics service to identify the commercial potential of any track, and give an indication of its most suitable target market.
