ORC's 2001 Gambling Monitor

In response to the Government's recently announced changes to the UK's gambling regulations, ORC International has released findings from its latest GamblerTrack 2001 study. This research shows a significant and ongoing decline in the number of Brits now visiting casinos.

ORC's research into the trends in the UK's gaming industry has highlighted a steep drop overall in gambling behaviour in fact. The data indicates a significant fall-off in the number of times people play at a variety of gaming venues including casinos, bingo clubs and on jackpot machines.

It appears that casinos have suffered one of the highest drops in visits, with a 33.5% decrease, compared to 2000. Bingo clubs (-23.9%) and jackpot machines (-12.0%) also fared badly.

Commenting on this general decline, ORC International's director of consumer services, Chris Brookes, said 'A substantial proportion of people we interviewed claimed that it wasn't just concern over money that had stopped them playing, they also said that they had lost interest in the activity. Perhaps the recently announced glitzy, Las Vegas-style casinos will revitalise this ailing industry.'
