British Supporters in the World Cup

June 5 2002

Nearly a third of Scots (30 percent) claim to be supporting England, while a similar amount said they would support 'anyone but England'. One in ten (11.8 percent) say they will put their support behind the Republic of Ireland. These are the surprising findings from a new survey conducted by Lightspeed Research (LSR).

The agency set out to explore World Cup interest and team preferences of more than 26,000 people. Just over 84 percent of all the respondents claimed to be interested in the World Cup. Confirming the surge in interest from women, only just under one in five of women interviewed said they were not interested in the event (compared to 14.4 percent of men).

Looking at the whole of Great Britain, more than 8 out of 10 people said they would be supporting England, when asked about their World Cup team preferences. However, there was still 4.1 percent who claimed they would be cheering for 'anyone but England'.

Lightspeed Research Online interviews were conducted amongst a 65,000 member consumer panel during May 2002.
