Belgian Internet Habits

Latest survey results from INRA show that at present 15% of the Belgian labour force has access to the Internet via the workplace. INRA has been measuring the evolution of Internet penetration in the country since 1998.

Every 6 months, the Net Surf survey interviews a sample of some 2,000 Belgians aged 15 and over about their equipment and their cyberbehaviour. The latest data also shows that 7% of the population have an Internet connection at their disposal through the school or the university they attend.

In 1998, 30% of Belgians had a PC at their disposal at home, but only one fifth of this computer park was equipped with an Internet connection. In 4 years, the percentage of PC owners has gone up to 47%, which means an increase of some 57%. But nowadays, 70% of these PCs are equipped with a connection.

The results of the last Net Surf wave (the ninth one) show that 37% of Belgians have used Internet during the last three months, which amounts to roughly 3,080,000 people. Just as continuous is the evolution of the number of users on an average day. 16% of the population would have used Internet the night before, i.e. approximately 1,350,000 people.
