Firefighters Told to Accept by British Public

November 13 2002

In a lightning poll carried out this week by The Mobile Channel, 48% of the British public stated that firefighters should accept the new 11% pay offer with only 15% saying strike.

Sir George Bain's review of firefighters' pay announced a recommendation for an 11% pay rise. However fire brigades union leader Andy Gilchrist appeared to be distancing his union from the outcome of the review, making a strike look more likely.

In the poll of 500 UK adults carried out on Monday afternoon by The Mobile Channel 48% said accept the 11% pay offer, with 37% recommending negotiation and only 15% supporting a strike at this stage suggesting that the firefighters' may need to proceed carefully if they are to maintain public support.

The poll was conducted via sms text messaging among a representative sample of 500 members of The Mobile Channel's 250,000 strong panel.
