Fourth Quarter 2002 TV Trends Report

March 1 2003

The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising in the UK (IPA) has recently published the Q4 2002 TV Trends Report. This reveals the lowest share seen for two years for the total commercial/non terrestrial sector.

ITV is showing small growth among commercial and non terrestrial channels and gained slight share in Q4. Both BBC channels performed well.

For most channels, patronage figures are a little higher in Q4 than a year ago which reverses declining trends from previous reports. However, it must be remembered that the two years are measured by different panels.

Demographically, channel performances retain much the same pattern as they have held for some time now with greatest share resting with the 16-34 year olds.

Overall viewing levels this quarter continue to be in line with recent historical levels as measured by the previous panel. The full year average is, however, depressed by the low level recorded during the first quarter of 2002.
