London-based Realeyes, which measures facial expressions and quantifies people’s emotional reactions through standard video devices such as webcams and in-store cameras, has appointed academics Jeffrey Cohn and Maja Pantic as new members of its Advisory Board.

Having recently completed a $3.2m round of investment, Realeyes says it is moving beyond panel-based testing to gathering emotional feedback from social media, mobile apps and in-store situations. Its analytics platform is currently used by companies such as Nielsen, Ipsos and Toluna.

Cohn, who joins from facial measurement firm Affectiva, is Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He is a specialist in automated facial coding and human emotions, and through his expertise in measuring non-verbal communication and the interpretation of human behaviour, Cohn will work to improve Realeyes’ research techniques and scientifically validate the methods employed.

Pantic serves as Professor of Affective and Behavioural Computing at Imperial College, London, and is a member of the Intelligent Behaviour Understanding Group, which focuses on using machines to research and analyse human behaviour and its applications for the field of human-computer interaction (HCI). At Realeyes, she will apply the latest research techniques to the firm’s analytics methodology.
