Academy of Social Sciences

March 9 2016

Dr Patten SmithDr Patten Smith, Ipsos MORI’s Director of Research Methods, has been made a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

The Academy’s mission is to promote social science in the UK for the public benefit. It is composed of around 1,000 individual Fellows, 41 learned societies, and a number of affiliate members, together representing nearly 900,000 social scientists. As a body, the Academy promotes research, publishes learned material, distributes information, organizes workshops and events, and contributes to public debates. It also responds to government and other consultations on behalf of the community, and sponsors a number of schemes that promoted social science, including the Campaign for Social Science.

The Academy has selected Dr Smith as one of 42 new Fellows drawn from across the spectrum of academia, practitioners, and policymakers recognised after a process of peer review for the excellence and impact of their work in the social sciences.

Dr Smith (pictured) currently leads the Research Methods Centre at Ipsos MORI, where his methodological contributions have ranged from sampling minority groups, to question wording effects and non-response analysis. Earlier, he was Director of Research Methods: Social Research at BMRB, and Group Head at SCPR (now NatCen), and during his career, Dr Smith has also been an industry advocate for high quality social research most notably in the role of Chair of the Social Research Association - a position he has held since 2010.
