An Introduction to Tuvalu

Formerly known as the Ellice Islands, Tuvalu is a Polynesian island nation located half way between Australia and Hawaii, comprising four reef islands and five atolls. It is the world's third least populated independent country (behind Vatican City and Nauru) and in area the fourth smallest (same two plus Monaco). The Ellice islands were administered by Britain as part of a protectorate from 1892 to 1974, latterly (from 1916) as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. Tuvalu became fully independent in 1978. That sinking feeling: According to USA Today, "...the entire Tuvalu land mass, nine slender South Pacific islands and atolls, is sinking... and is apparently doomed to ultimately sink beneath the ocean. Tuvalu might then leave a legacy imagined only in science-fiction novels. It could become the first virtual nation... a country that exists only on the internet. If Tuvalu's land disappears, its population will disperse, yet Tuvalu, under international law, will remain a sovereign nation even though its only "real estate" will be the ".tv" internet domain."
