Acquisitive Tobii Raises $15m

August 22 2014

Eye tracking specialist Tobii Technology has raised $15m (SEK 100m) to support its continued expansion in existing and new markets, and specifically its acquisition of speech-generating tech firm DynaVox Systems.

Henrik EskilssonAs well as eye tracking solutions for the market research sector, Tobii develops accessibility solutions for people with various physical and cognitive disabilities. The firm is based in Stockholm, Sweden, and has offices in the USA, Germany, Norway, Japan and China.

The new investment comes from Sixth Swedish National Pension Fund (AP6), and will partly be used to finance Tobii's $18m acquisition of Dynavox, which develops speech-generating devices for people with cognitive communication disabilities such as autism, aphasia and developmental delay. Two years ago, Chip maker Intel invested $21m in Tobii, to help the company move its eye tracking and gaze interaction solutions to 'mass-market' applications; and three years previously, the firm secured $16m in expansion funding.

CEO Henrik Eskilsson (pictured) comments: 'Funding from AP6 gives us the substance we need to strengthen Tobii's position in each market while we continue to expand. AP6 and Tobii have had a sound relationship for a long time. From our perspective, this is a very healthy next step in terms of Tobii's ownership.'
