Ipsos Buys in Japan

September 23 2004

Ipsos has announced the acquisition of Japan Statistics and Research Co Ltd (JSR). The global group already has a major presence in the market via Ipsos Novaction, specialists in forecasting, modelling and consulting, and combined revenues of the two companies will place it in Japan's Top 5 survey-based MR companies.

JSR was founded in 1968 by Mr. Seiichi Uchida and is based in Osaka and Tokyo. During the last fiscal year, it achieved a turnover in excess of 3,000 ¥ million (24 million euros). It employs 80 full-time staff and serves major Japanese and international companies in the fast moving consumer goods, durables and IT sectors. It has a common basis of international key clients with Ipsos.

JSR has Japanese consumer access panels totalling 900,000 individuals, plus an online panel with a further 380,000 - this is a rapidly expanding sector in the Japanese market.

Ipsos' Asia Pacific strength is building, with its ranks in the five main MR markets now as follows: Japan 5th; China 3rd; Australia 5th; Korea 6th; Taiwan 7th. Ipsos Co-Chairman Didier Truchot says the acquisition will 'firmly establish Ipsos on the Japanese market... With the senior and expert teams of JSR we will be able to propose to our clients our specialised products portfolio, particularly in the field of advertising and marketing research'.

Seiichi Uchida, President and CEO of JSR and former President of the Japan Marketing Research Association, says the move is significant both for JSR and for the market research industry in Japan: 'With the globalisation trend to be expected to accelerate, we must be able to provide wider range of services with higher quality. The opportunity for our people to be a part of the first-class global player is also unlimited. I strongly believe that this deal will satisfy the demand from the global market and generate tremendous synergy for all of us'.
