Enhanced BookTrends Puts Kids in with the Adults

December 8 2004

Ipsos-Insight has announced a number of changes to its BookTrendsSM syndicated service, including the amalgamation of hitherto separate databases for Adult Trade and Juvenile Books into one. The new package also offers improved data delivery, enhanced classifications and analysis, and quarterly rather than bi-annual reporting.

BookTrends is used by publishers to create the most appropriate mix of titles based upon longitudinal shifts in consumers' demographic composition and purchase preferences, according to Chief Analyst Barrie Rappaport. 'Put most simply, it's having the right genre, right title, and right marketing program in place when readers walk through the door of their preferred book purchasing outlet'.

Rappaport says 2004 has been 'a transitional year' for the long-running service. 'Top book publishers and retailers have shifted their focus by placing the book purchasing consumer front-and-center when making publishing decisions. As part of this process, publishers came to us with specific enhancements they would like to see to the service, many of which were integrated into the new system'.

Among the other new features are quarterly data delivery instead of bi-annual, share of wallet analyses, improved category classifications and segmentation analysis capabilities based on demographics and/or purchase behavior. The key strategic measures such as customer reach, purchase frequency and transaction size will now be readily available analysed by genre, publisher, and outlet.

BookTrends has been tracking the industry for more than 20 years and uses a panel of 16,000 nationally representative households who maintain daily purchase diaries. More information is available at www.ipsos-insight.com/consumer/publications/books/
