Brand Research Shows Coca-Cola Tops UK Chart

August 16 2001

Coca-Cola is still the UK's biggest consumer brand, but Britons are developing a taste for health foods and Australian wine. This is the headline conclusion of the annual survey of the UK's top fifty brands conducted by ACNielsen and Marketing magazine.

The research reveals that there has been little change in the ranking of the major brands year on year. In this sense, all seven leading products were also in the lead in last year's survey. This means that Coke has stayed well in front with its annual sales of £665-£770m in the year to April, followed by PepsiCo-owned Walker's crisps with £480m-£485m. The only brands near the top of the ranking to show any significant growth were Stella Artois lager and Müller yoghurts. Both of these are believed to have registered an annual increase in sales of over 20%.

The ten best-selling brands according to the latest survey are:

  • Coca-Cola
  • Walker's
  • Nescafé
  • Stella Artois
  • Müller
  • Persil
  • Andrex toilet tissue
  • Robinson's juices
  • Kit Kat
  • Pepsi.

Sales rankings were found to have shifted more dramatically further down the research list. Most dramatically, Procter & Gamble's orange drink Sunny Delight tumbled from sixteenth place to number 42, following a 35% drop in sales.

At the top of the table of fastest growing brands was artificial sweetener Nothing Comes Closer to Sugar, owned by Silver Spoon. The data show that this enjoyed a staggering 3,200% growth, though it spent more on advertising than it gained in sales. Health foods brands also featured prominently as fast growers, with Provamel soya products and wholesome baby foods Hipp and Baby Organix among the twenty fastest growing brands.

Australian wines also experienced rapid growth. In particular, Hardy's Stamps, Banrock Station, Blossom Hill and Lindemans all appeared in the top twenty. In fact, wine was the fastest growing sector, followed by pot desserts, cakes and cider. Fabric care witnessed the worst year-on-year change, with sales falling 6%. This occurred despite high ad spend, making it the second highest sector by marketing expenditure behind personal care.

The ten fastest growing brands according to the latest survey are:

  • Nothing Comes Closer to Sugar
  • Charmin'
  • Lowther's Cakes
  • Baby Organix
  • Danone Bio Activ
  • Banrock Station
  • Supasweet
  • Hipp
  • Homepride Pasta Sauces
  • Blossom Hill.

The power of the brand continues!
