New Corporate Reputation Index

March 22 2002

RoperASW recently launched the 2002 FORTUNE/Roper Corporate Reputation Index, a tool for measuring industry and public opinion about more than 450 Fortune 500 companies.

The study builds on FORTUNE magazine's long history of publishing its America's Most Admired Companies list, which provides ratings by business executives and industry analysts of the reputations of Fortune 500 companies. The FORTUNE/Roper Corporate Reputation Index provides detailed assessments of corporate reputations as perceived by industry experts and the general public. Criteria include quality of products and services, innovation, financial strength, commitment to customers and employees and social and environmental responsibility. Respondents also indicate how likely they would be to recommend the company's products/services and stock.

Corporations who use this research are able to see how well they have done across numerous reputation attributes, compare themselves to leading competitors, and learn which companies -- regardless of industry -- rank highest in each criteria. Additionally, the FORTUNE/Roper Corporate Reputation Index is the only index that looks at multiple stakeholder groups, including individual investors, the online community and Influential Americans.

'Corporate reputation is key to ensuring company health,' says John Gilfeather, Vice Chairman and Director of the FORTUNE(r)/Roper Corporate Reputation Index. 'It goes beyond branding to address other essential functions and constituents, such as heightening investor interest, attracting and retaining talented employees, increasing receptivity at the local level, and helping companies weather a crisis.'

Now in its third year, the FORTUNE/Roper Corporate Reputation Index features trend data to help companies understand how their corporate reputation may have changed over time, including before and after the dot-com crash, the September 11 terror attacks and the recession.
