LiquorScan Research goes Solo

April 8 2002

ACNielsen U.S. has fully acquired the alcohol beverage information services it previously jointly-owned with Adams Business Research. The specialist research, known as LiquorScan, is to now be operated across the States by ACNielsen alone.

LiquorScan is already a well-known provider of market and store data and analysis to American clients. ACNielsen hopes to maintain and improve the existing service, continuing to focus specifically on the needs of this one large industry sector.

The information services, including exclusive reporting on sales in 15 U.S. markets, have tracked sales of wine, spirits and beer since 1993. The coverage offered includes data on the grocery, drug, mass merchandise, and convenience channels of trade. It arguably provides the most comprehensive source of information to the US alcohol beverage industry today.

Retailer-specific information is also available for many key players, such as ABC Fine Wine & Spirits (the largest off-licence chain in the U.S), Kappy's (Boston's leading alcohol retailer), Goody-Goody of Dallas; Houston-based Spec's Liquor Warehouse; and Spirits' Unlimited (one of the largest alcohol retailers in New Jersey). Additional insights into US alcohol beverage sales will continue to be generated through the ACNielsen Homescan consumer panel, as well as via the ACNielsen KnowledgeWorks advanced analytics group.

According to John Petrakis, senior vice president of marketing for ACNielsen U.S., 'This acquisition will enable us to build on the tremendous momentum generated by the joint venture over the past nine years. Not only will we continue providing high-quality coverage of the alcohol beverage industry, but we plan to significantly enhance the services as well by applying our world class client service / management expertise. We are very excited about the possibilities and look forward to bringing important new insights to the alcohol beverage industry.'
