WPP Bid for Marketing Services

January 22 2003

In a recent press interview, the president of WPP Group, Martin Sorrell, has outlined his plans for refocusing the company's business development and strategy on the marketing services sector (including research) away from advertising.

In an interview in the French business paper La Tribune, Mr Sorrell indicated that he would like to boost the part of marketing services from its current share of 55% of group revenues to around two-thirds within five years. At present, traditional advertising generates the balance of income for WPP.

Additionally in a move aimed at stabilizing revenues more equally on a geographical basis and spreading the risk of global recession, WPP is looking to refocus growth outside the USA which currently represents 45% of group sales. A further 35% of revenues is generated in Europe and the remaining 20% in other continents. The goal in the next five to ten years is to more evenly distribute this spread of revenues.
