Tesco Introduces Automated Staff Survey System

February 14 2003

Britain's leading grocer Tesco has commissioned employee research specialist ORC International, to develop a customised survey management system that will enable the company's HR team to design, process and analyse data from various employee research projects in-house.

The Internet 'portal' tool, will allow Tesco to fully customise Viewpoint - its employee survey - from the creation of questions through to the delivery of individual reports to managers. Viewpoint is Tesco's annual survey of around 215,000 employees in the UK and Eire.

The application will have a number of key elements for ease of use, while ensuring that HR staff have sufficient flexibility to create meaningful results.

The four key elements of the survey portal will be:

  • Questionnaire Module: to design questionnaires and administer on-line surveys
  • Data Processing Module: to import data from external sources and aggregate data
  • Data Analysis Module: to produce static reports, enable interactive interrogation of data and output data that can be fed into a statistical analysis package
  • Survey Management Module: to provide management and administration facilities.

Ros McKean, Viewpoint manager at Tesco commented: 'Our 'Viewpoint' survey is an important way for the company to listen to staff on a local, national and international level. This new automated portal system will make it more efficient, simpler and more cost effective for us to conduct this survey, and will also allow us to analyse the data much faster and more thoroughly than before. The portal will also allow us to undertake various ad-hoc surveys throughout the year which will help us continue to measure the valuable opinions of Tesco staff.'
