ORC Employee Research Conference

May 21 2003

ORC International will be hosting its eight annual employee research conference in London on 3 June for client-side HR personnel. The event will enable participants from a wide range of organisations to share best practice for conducting employee research, and provide the opportunity to discuss how employee research can be used to address the challenges facing HR professionals.

This year's agenda includes papers from a number of leading organisations, including:

  • Tips for First Time Surveyors - Annemarie Elmer will describe Baker & McKenzie's experiences of conducting its first employee survey. She will outline the survey objectives, process, feedback and use of results, and highlight lessons learnt.
  • Using research to drive organisational change - Julie Thomson will discuss the process Magnet followed to communicate the results of its last survey, and how the company has been successful in driving forward action that has led to improved staff satisfaction.
  • Communicating with staff during times of change - During times of change, it is particularly important to communicate effectively with staff. Jeremy Day from Safeway will discuss how the organisation has dealt with recent challenges and has been successful at keeping staff informed.
  • Living the corporate values - RAC plc has strongly defined core values, which are now embedded into everything the company does. Mandy Spooner will describe these values and how they have been used to create the first colleague satisfaction survey, and shape the survey outcomes.
  • Managing your motivation - This paper from Adrian Heywood of Si Group will examine what it is that makes organisations and people outperform their competitors. Adrian will also look at how to access employee potential by managing attitude, and discuss how to create a positive and more resourceful response to difficult issues.
  • Analysing the effect of survey methodology - The Department of Work and Pensions ran its first survey of all 145,000 staff last summer. While the majority of staff completed the survey on paper, a sample of staff used the Internet. Mary Dalgleish will describe how the results were analysed to assess whether the survey methodology used influenced the results.

Explaining the purpose of the conference, ORC International's head of employee research, Kate Pritchard said: 'In today's highly competitive marketplace, it is recognised that retaining loyal, motivated, committed and satisfied employees has a major impact on successful business performance. Our conference will provide the forum for speakers from leading organisations to share their experiences of conducting employee research. We aim to provide insight into the best methods for designing, implementing and acting on the wealth of information provided by employee research.'
