The naming of a nation: The word 'Papua' is derived from the Malay word that describes 'frizzy Melanesian hair', and 'New Guinea' (Nueva Guinea) was coined by the explorer Ynigo Ortiz de Retez, who noted the similarity of the people to those he had seen along the Guinea coast of Africa.
