Country Profile

Kyrgyzstan, is a Central Asian country of incredible natural beauty and proud nomadic traditions. Most of the country was formally annexed to Russia in 1876. The Kyrgyz staged a major revolt against the Tsarist Empire in 1916 in which almost one-sixth of the population was killed. A Soviet republic from 1936, it achieved independence in 1991.

The country hit the headlines in April 2010 with riots which were provoked by alleged government corruption, and rising prices. In June there were further disturbances this time between the Kyrgyz and the Uzbeks. While this has now died down approximately 300,000 people have been displaced, and 100,000 have sought asylum in Uzbekistan.

The Epic of Manas This is the classic centerpiece of Kyrgyz literature, containing nearly five hundred thousand lines which makes it twenty times longer than Homer's Odyssey and Iliad combined. Parts of it are often recited at Kyrgyz festivities by specialists in the epic, called Manaschi. Manaschis tell the tale in a melodic chant unaccompanied by musical instruments.

Kyrgyzstan has many Manaschis. Narrators who know all three episodes of the epic (the tales of Manas, of his son Semetei and of his grandson Seitek) can acquire the status of Great Manaschi.
