Country Profile

Kazakhstan, the ninth largest country in the world by area, has been inhabited since the Stone Age and it is believed that on its rolling steppes human beings first domesticated the horse.
The area was conquered by Russia in the 18th century, and Kazakhstan was the last Soviet republic to gain independence, on 16th of December 1991. The communist-era leader, Nursultan Nazarbayev, became the country's new president then an office he still holds.
Kazakhstan's economy is larger than those of all the other Central Asian states combined, largely due to the country's vast natural resources and a recent history of political stability.
