Turn Again Challenged over 'Zombie Cookies'

June 29 2015

In California, ad targeting company Turn faces another lawsuit over its use of enhanced cookie technology, said to violate California's Unfair Competition Act.

The firm won $80m in backing in January 2014, to develop its technology platform, data science and machine learning algorithms, and cross-channel and data-focused products, but a year later became embroiled in a potential class action privacy lawsuit in New York with its partner, telecoms giant Verizon, over its use of so-called 'zombie' cookies, which restore themselves after standard deletion.

According to www.mediapost.com , California resident Deena Kay alleges in a complaint filed last week in Los Angeles County Superior Court that 'Turn has compiled deeply personal and private information without users' knowledge or consent by tracking website usage'. The suit says Turn tracked Verizon users' Web activity by drawing on UIDH headers added to mobile traffic.
