In the US, the Trump administration has named former institutional investor and economic analyst George Cook as the successor to Dr. Ron Jarmin, who had been serving as the Census Bureau's acting director since February.In a statement on Friday the Bureau said Cook would be 'Performing the Duties of Director', taking over from Jarmin, who had been in the role following the departure of Robert Santos. Jarmin will continue to serve as the agency's Deputy Director and COO.
Cook is also Chief of Staff in the Office of the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the Department of Commerce (DOC), and is performing the non-exclusive functions and duties of the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the DOC. Before coming to the Trump Administration, he worked at Brevan Howard from 2012 to 2017, and BlackRock from 2017 to 2024. In these roles he managed portfolios of global government bonds, interest rates and currencies, while conducting in-depth research on economic and policy developments to support investment positions - making extensive use of Census data. He is a graduate of Yale University with majors in philosophy and economics.
