In the US, academic publisher and e-learning specialist John Wiley & Sons has appointed Judy Verses as Executive Vice President, Research. She takes over from Philip Carpenter, who is retiring.

Verses (pictured) will join on October 24 with more than 30 years’ experience. Most recently, she worked at online language learning and literacy firm Rosetta Stone, where she was President, Global Enterprise and Education. Before this, she was President and Chief Client Officer at educational enterprise software developer Blackboard; and she held several senior roles at telecoms giant Verizon, including SVP Marketing. In addition, she has served as a mentor with the Laura Bush Fellowship Initiative, and from 2014-2015 was a Non-Executive Director on the Board of education technology firm Promethean World.

Verses takes over from Carpenter, who joined Blackwell Publishers in 1979, which was acquired by Wiley in 2007. President and CEO Mark Allin comments: ‘Judy’s career reflects her lifelong passion for enabling knowledge, with its power to transform individuals and the world in which we live. She is a leader who develops talent, builds teams, and creates an environment that values performance and empowers employees to do their best work and be successful. Philip retires with our affection and gratitude.’
