Jar Wars Laos is home to one of the most mysterious and dangerous places in the world - the Plain of Jars. Thousands of stone jars scattered throughout the Xieng Khouang plain in the Lao Highlands are around 2,000 years old, but no-one really knows what they were used for; theories range from kilns to crematoria to water depositories. Laos was dragged in to the Vietnam war, and still holds the dubious record of being the world's most bombed country, something that still haunts the Plain of Jars 'oday: thousands of tonnes of unexploded ordnance lie on the plains, and visitors can only visit three sites and should follow warning signs and paths - although many ignore them.

Laos in Profile

The Lao People's Democratic Republic is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, tracing its history to the Kingdom of Lan Xang or Land of a Million Elephants, which existed from the 14th to the 18th century. After a period as a French protectorate, it gained independence in 1949.

In the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese Army occupied part of the east of Laos as a staging ground and supply route, and in 1975, the communist Pathet Lao, backed by this army and the Soviet Union, overthrew the royalist government: King Savang Vatthana later died in captivity.
