The Mongols conquered a huge Eurasian empire under Genghis Khan in the 13th century. After his death the empire was divided and then broke apart, the Mongols retiring to their original steppe homelands. Under Chinese rule from the late 17th century, Mongolia won its independence in 1921 with Soviet backing and a Communist regime was installed in 1924. A democratic revolution in early 1990 has led to a multi-party system and a market economy.
The geography of Mongolia is extremely varied with the Gobi Desert to the south and mountainous regions to the north and west. Most of the country is hot in the summer and extremely cold in the winter. The temperature can fall as low as -30C (-22F) and Ulaanbaatar has the lowest average temperature of any national capital in the world.
