Reveal Mobile Gets Patent for Recycled Data Prevention

March 18 2021

Location-based marketing firm Reveal Mobile has been awarded a US patent for a solution allowing companies to detect whether their data has been used in ways that breach contractual agreements.

Brian HandlyBased in Raleigh, NC, Reveal provides location-based audience data derived from GPS, Bluetooth beacons and WiFi, creating segments that can be used for ad targeting and retargeting. The technology uses a device's historical location data to determine not only the retailers and other sites it is likely to visit beyond its current location, but also the date and times it is likely to visit them. The firm's portfolio includes the VISIT Local, VISIT Match 360 and VISIT Data products.

The new patent covers the embedding of camouflaged, customized or synthetic data events and data points in proprietary data sets, preventing their unauthorized use - for example when data collected and sold by a first party makes its way through the market and is ultimately resold to the originating first party. Reveal Mobile says that to protect themselves against the unwanted proliferation of data or the repurchase of original data, companies can add synthetic events or data points to data sets to prevent themselves from buying previously acquired data.

The new patent - Method for Custom-Tagging and Recognizing Recycled Data - enables data brokers to protect themselves from contract breaches and from investing in data that is duplicative. CEO Brian Handly (pictured) comments: 'Among other uses, this patent makes possible the digital equivalent of paper towns, an imaginary place that appears on a map to detect the map's illegal sale, transfer or reproduction. Companies and consumers deserve to deal with authentic and accurate data in everything we do. It's the backbone of a modern, digital economy. This patent underscores Reveal Mobile's leadership in data integrity and reliability'.
