Australia's Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) is to expand its regional audience surveys, conducted by Xtra Insights, to include more markets this year, while for the first time CATI surveys will be supplemented by the launch of online survey sampling in eight markets.

New markets and new methods for 2024CRA is the peak industry body representing the interests of commercial radio broadcasters throughout Australia, and manages the country's radio ad currency surveys as well as revenue reporting, industry codes and standards, and regulatory and legislative matters.

CRA Chief Executive Ford Ennals says the Regional Radio Audience Measurement Survey (RRAMS) schedule will increase to 22 markets this year, up from 20 in 2023, to provide listener insights on 64 commercial regional radio stations and more than 26 ABC stations. RRAMS has completed 177 surveys in ten years, representing the listening habits of 6.6 million Australians aged 10 and over.

Last year saw the first surveys in the markets of Deniliquin, Wangaratta and Campbelltown. This year the schedule includes four market in New Douth Wales, seven in Queensland, six in Western Australia and two in Tasmani, plus one each in Victoria, South Australia and Northern Territory. CRA also works with GfK Metropolitan Radio Measurement, which conducts listener surveys in Gold Coast, Canberra and Newcastle as well as the eight surveys of the five major metro markets* each year.

Ennals comments: 'We know commercial radio stations are vital to regional and remote communities and we want to get a deeper understanding of regional listeners and their listening habits. We have been conducting regional radio surveys for a decade now, and we are always keen to keep expanding our research and improve the research methodology'.
