Google Consolidates Search Lead

Google gained in year-on-year search market share for the eighth consecutive month and maintained its status as market leader in March with 42.7% of US searches conducted on its sites, according to qSearch analysis from comScore. In the UK, Hitwise stats show Google is far more dominant with 74.8%, nearly ten times its nearest rival MSN.

In the US, Yahoo! remained in second place with 28.0% and MSN third 13.2%. Americans conducted 6.4bn searches online in March, up 10% from last month (the year's largest monthly gain) and 15% versus March last year. 2.7bn search queries were made on Google sites. It also leads the toolbar search market with 48.9%, but Yahoo! is close behind on 46.5%, leaving very little room for the rest of the market.

Meanwhile in the UK, Google's domination is far more impressive. According to data from Hitwise UK in the last week, Google powered 74.8% of all UK internet searches in the four weeks ending 1st April, with MSN.co.uk dwindling in the rear view mirror on 6.7% (7.8% when combined with its .com property). Yahoo! Search is next with 5.7% (7.5% including the .com Yahoo! Search) and Ask, formerly AskJeeves, fourth with 5.4% (5.6% with .com).
