Surge in TV Households

February 8 2007

The growth of new media notwithstanding, Nielsen Media Research is forecasting a massive 47% rise in the number of TV-owning households in the States – up from 111.4 million to 163.7 million – in its annual report 'Projected Estimates of TV Households and Persons 2008 to 2050'.

The report also highlights the expected increases in the number of TV-owning households among different ethnic communities:

  • African-American from 1.3 million to 2.2 million
  • Hispanic from 1.1 million to 3.1 million
  • Asian from 0.4 million to 1.1 million.
Overall, it is anticipated that the number of people living in households with TVs will grow 40% (from 283.5 million to 396.3 million), and for African-Americans the increase will be 59%, for Hispanics 136% and for Asians 155%.

The figures are based on estimates from demographic data provider Claritas. Detailed projections are online at: www.NielsenMedia.com .
