Nielsen EDI Expands with International Movie Market

June 25 2007

Box office measurement division Nielsen EDI has expanded its coverage to include Japan and South Korea, the two largest box office markets in Asia.

Nick King, President, International, for Nielsen Entertainment, says the extension 'marks a huge stride forward in our goal of providing the motion picture community with the global, real-time information they need to make informed business decisions as major movies open around the world.'

The additions give clients access to daily box office receipts information from seventeen countries in North and South America, Europe and Asia Pacific, representing 80% of the global marketplace and over 60,000 cinema screens. In 2006, Japan was the world's second largest box office market, with revenues of $1.8bn, with South Korea sixth (just over $1bn).

The company also announced the list of 29 films to be honored with its 2007 International Gold Reel Award and three with the Platinum Reel Award. The former recognises films that have grossed more than $100 million outside North America, the latter those with more than $500m (two of the three are Pirates of the Caribbean movies and the third Spider-Man 3). Tim Ganser, Nielsen EDI's Vice President, International Client Service, says 22 of the 29 films grossed more internationally than in North America, affirming the importance of the international marketplace to US filmmakers and further underlining the importance of the the extension in coverage.

The firm is a division of Nielsen Entertainment, within The Nielsen Company (web site: www.nielsen.com ).
