comScore Expands qSearch Market View

comScore has updated its qSearch analytics suite to encompass market share measurement of the five major US search engines; the top 50 most trafficked properties where search activity is observed; and vertical search locations such as eBay, Amazon and Expedia.

The top 50 properties include MySpace, China's Baidu and Korea's Naver.

Previously the system - which was launched in June (www.mrweb.com/drno/news6976.htm ) - was restricted to searches occurring at major web search engines such as Google or Yahoo!

Now known as qSearch 2.0, the firm says its upgraded service will provide clients with an in-depth view of the 'search universe' both in the US and worldwide. They will also be able to conduct:

  • Partner Search - searches initiated at partner sites that redirect the visitor to a search engine site
  • Cross-Channel Search - counts multiple searches when using more than one search tab (eg web, images, news) for a single search term
  • Local Search - maps, directions, and local directory listings
  • Worldwide Search - includes comprehensive reporting of worldwide search, with individual country reporting for the US, Canada, Mexico, UK, France, Germany, Japan, China, and Korea.
According to James Lamberti, comScore Senior VP of Search Solutions: 'qSearch 2.0 gives the most comprehensive and accurate view of the entire search market, and reports on some sites that people wouldn't consider as classic search engines. Basically, we can track any open query data anywhere on the web. That can include things like map searches, Internet Yellow Pages, or job searches.'

Clients will also be able to identify whether the search originates from a text box on a search engine portal, an auto-search typed in the browser's URL line, a search from a text box on a downloaded search toolbar, local search, or a partner site.

The expanded search universe will gradually add the ability to view search within a collection of vertical sites such as shopping, travel, or careers.

comScore will still publish its monthly core search market share report. Last month the report showed that Google Sites ranked as the top core search engine with 55.2% of searches among the top five engines. Yahoo! Sites ranked second with 23.5%, followed by Microsoft Sites (12.3%), Ask Network (4.7%) and Time Warner Network (4.4%). To keep this metric consistent, the new data will be reported separately, so clients who want to consider it can include it in their reports, and those that do not want to include it can ignore it.
