Global Research Growth of 3.9%

September 29 2008

Global research turnover rose in line with expectations last year to just over US$28bn, according to statistics from ESOMAR, revealed at last week's annual Congress. The rise from 2006 figures was 6.5% or 3.9% after adjustment for inflation.

The latest figures were unveiled at the professional association's 61st Annual Congress at the Palais des Congrès in Montreal last week, which attracted more than 1,000 delegates from 60 countries.

Among the two largest markets, North American growth beat that in Europe (3.6% post-inflation vs 3.2%) but the gap was smaller than last year, with North America 'slightly softening' and Europe improving. European revenue stands at around $12.4bn and North American $9.5bn.

The organisation reported strong growth in Asia Pacific (6.2% after inflation to $4.1bn), the Middle East and Africa (up 13.7% to $0.47bn), but says the Latin American research market 'slowed significantly' with growth of only 1.2% to $1.3bn.

18 countries made double-digit year-on-year gains after inflation was taken into account. Details and contents listing for the report are at www.esomar.org/web/publication/book.php?id=1859 .
