Phorm Launches in Korea

March 30 2009

Ad targeting software company Phorm has announced the beginning of a market trial with KT, Korea's biggest Internet service provider (ISP); the opening of an office in Seoul; and the appointment of Daniel Park as CEO of Phorm Korea.

Park joins from Korean portal SK Communications, where he was Senior Vice President of the Search and Portal Division.

Phorm founder and CEO Kent Ertugrul comments: 'Just as KT has led the way in helping to create one of the world's leading online societies, we believe that today's announcement will put Korea at the forefront of a new revenue model for the Internet which creates exciting opportunities for all concerned. This system promises to boost the value chain that connects consumers, content creators and advertisers. We also believe that this technology offers a new model for online privacy by demonstrating how users can browse in complete anonymity, with no storage of browsing history while showing offers which they find useful.'

Korea has the sixth largest broadband market in the world and a particularly high penetration. KT has market share of around 44%.

Phorm has changed its senior line-up in the UK since last year, and boasts Norman Lamont, Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1990 to 1993, as a Board member. After a rocky start surrounding BT's trials of the product, for which user permission was not obtained, Phorm cleared a major hurdle in the UK in September when the country's BERR authority ruled that the system did not break EU data protection laws so long as users are given an easy option to opt-out.
