Thailand is the only nation in Southeast Asia that has never been colonised: it had a long succession of very able rulers in the 1800s and successfully exploited the rivalry and tension between the French and the British. However it did lose large territories on the east side of the Mekong, in the 19th century.Thailand is an emerging economy and considered as a Newly Industrialized Country, which enjoyed the world's highest growth rate from 1985 to 1996 - averaging 9.4% annually.
