Ipsos Launches In-Store Facial Profiling

October 25 2013

In the UK, Ipsos Retail Performance has introduced new facial analysis technology called 'Shopper Profile', promising retailers a better understanding of the demographics and behaviour of their customers.

Peter LuffPowered by Intel's AIM Suite software, the new tool combines simple sensors with programs to analyse shoppers' faces in-store. Non-personal information is collected on how consumers respond to visual messages, how they move through stores, and how they engage with in-store messages - from the moment they enter until they exit. In addition, the software gathers data about gender and age range, as well as information about what content was viewed and for how long.

The tool features an 'Audience Counter' which automatically identifies the profile of a person from a digital image or a video frame and converts it into anonymous analytical data. In addition, it includes an 'Opportunities to See Counter', which uses sensors to log shoppers as they move through specific areas of a retail environment, such as the main entrance or a particular department. This data can then be used to adjust signage or merchandising in response to shopper behaviour, and can also alert staff when customers need help to shop.

Peter Luff (pictured), President of Ipsos Retail Performance, comments: 'Shopper Profile has been designed for marketers, retailers and real-time brands, providing detailed and insightful analytics to help retailers measure shopper numbers and behaviours. With access to this information, retailers have a better understanding of their customer base and this can assist with more strategic management of what product lines they should stock and where they should house them in store.'
