Splunk Connection Revs Up Insight Engines

July 24 2017

San Francisco-based machine data interrogation firm Insight Engines has raised $15.8m in a Series A round of funding, which it will use to accelerate its product roadmap and expand its sales and marketing teams.

The new round was led by August Capital, with participation from analysis firm Splunk, Real Ventures, Data Collective and individual investors Erik Swan and Simon Crosby. August Capital General Partner David Hornik, an original investor in Splunk, will join the Insight Engines board as will Swan, a co-founder and former CTO of Splunk.

The company was founded in 2015 by CEO Grant Wernick and CTO Jacob Perkins with the aim of making machine data 'accessible and actionable to everyone'. Non-technical users can ask direct questions in plain English of their data and receive answers in seconds. The first product - catchily named Insight Engines Cyber Security Investigator for Splunk - was released last autumn, and Wernick says its scope will be broadened beyond its current focus, security, applying similar innovative methods to solve problems in areas such as operations, application delivery and business analytics.

Swan says of his investment: 'I've been in the valley a long time, and it's rare I've seen a company with this kind of traction and revenues at this stage which is why I was stoked to invest and join the board. Insight Engines is solving a real problem and has awesome technology and happy customers. I see a lot of similarities to Splunk, which is now doing close to a billion in revenues'.
