Turner Broadcasting CRO Howard Shimmel 'Resigns'

Howard Shimmel, Turner Broadcasting's Chief Research Officer, has resigned from his role, according to a report published in Variety Magazine.

Time Warner-owned TBS creates programs on TV and other platforms for consumers around the world, including CNN news, entertainment, cartoons and sports. Shimmel (pictured) joined in 2012 as SVP of Advertising Sales and Sports Research, after seven years at Nielsen, where he latterly served as VP of Nielsen Media and Advertising Analytics. Earlier, he was VP of Marketing Research at America Online (AOL), and before this, he spent ten years at MTV Networks, initially as VP, Audience Research and later as VP of Ad Sales Research.

During his time with Turner, Shimmel has overseen all multi-screen entertainment, news, kids and sports research, as well as corporate analysis and insight-led efforts. He has also helped drive the company's efforts around the consumer journey to better capture measurement for both Turner and its partners; and in 2016, he launched the Turner AdLab, which focuses on future needs of consumers and advertisers relating to changing technologies and viewing habits.

According to Variety's report, Shimmel's departure follows Turner's promotion of Chief Data Strategist Stephano Kim to the position of Interim Chief Analytics Officer, overseeing a newly aligned unit that specializes in delivering corporate data strategy and analytics. In a statement, Turner said that Shimmel felt that the new structure did not ensure a 'sufficiently challenging enough role for him', and he expected to leave the company after working on some special projects.
