Hitwise Reveals Tennis Winners

If Wimbledon were a popularity contest, Maria Sharapova would win hands-down. And even Anna Kournikova would be in with a shout, despite her recent retirement. Data from Hitwise reveals the most searched-for tennis personalities online aren't always the best performers on court.

It's no surprise that Maria Sharapova, winner of last year's Wimbledon Singles, tops the list with more than 2 per cent of all tennis-related searches. But Russian Anna Kournikova is also in the top ten, despite recently quitting tennis.

Roger Federer, Wimbledon's number one seed, is languishing at number 27 while number two seed, American Andy Roddick, and the UK's Tim Henman are proving far more popular with British tennis fans - at numbers two and three respectively.

The top 10 tennis personalities, based on search terms data for the four weeks ending 18th June 2005 are as follows.

3. Tim Henman
4. Rafael Nadal
5. Pete Sampras
6. Anna Kournikova
7. Kim Clijsters
8. Andre Agassi
9. Serena Williams
10. Jelena Dokic.
