Songness Offers Music Evaluation Service

February 19 2009

Music web site Songness.com is offering free audience research for new songs posted by independent musicians.

Songness uses its own rating system to generate song recommendations for users. These personalized recommendations are based on algorithms that predict how fans will rate every song in the database. A filter is then applied to compare individuals to those groups that influence them, and weight the influence accordingly.

Every registered song is initially rated by up to 200 fans, and they can recommend songs they like to their friends and invite them to listen.

Based on its ratings each song is given a unique audience profile that links it to groups of listeners. The artist then receives a free audience report for each rated song.

'Such a comprehensive approach to ratings allows Songness to give fans more and better recommendations across genres, and to systematically introduce them to artists they don't already know,' explained EVP Bill Ahlhauser. 'It's the kind of research that only record companies have been able to afford up till now.'

Songness is currently open for independent artist and label registration, while a public launch date will be announced soon.

Last week, online music intelligence platform Band Metrics announced it is testing a web application to collect, analyze and display popularity and trends data for musicians and bands; while in January UK firm Slicethepie also announced a music analytics service.
