An Introduction to Vietnam

Forming the eastern edge of the Indochina Peninsula, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is the 13th most populous country in the world. Vietnam was independent for 900 years between victory over China in AD 938 at the battle of Bach Dang River and colonization by the French in the mid-19th century. A century later when France was expelled, the nation was left divided politically into two countries. Fighting between the two sides continued during the Vietnam War, ending with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975. See full country profile.

Tet Nguyen Dan (Festival of the Day) ushers in the Lunar New Year and is the most significant date in the Vietnamese Calendar. It's a time when families reunite in the hope of good fortune in the coming year, and ancestral spirits are welcomed back in to the family home. And the whole of Vietnam celebrates a birthday: everyone becomes another year older! If you are visiting Vietnam during Tet, be sure to learn this phrase: Chuc Mung Nam Moi - Happy New Year! Vietnam in Profile

Political isolation, resentment over harsh treatment of the south and central planning hindered recovery until reforms were announced in 1986. Its economic growth has been among the highest in the world in the past decade, culminating in Vietnam joining the WTO in 2007 and the UN Security Council, as a non-permanent member, in 2008.
