Progress for Placed

Location analytics firm Placed, Inc., formerly known as Sewichi, has completed a $3.4m Series A round of funding, and announced beta availability for its forthcoming 'Placed for Developers' solution. It has also recruited Andrea Eatherly as Director of Marketing and Operations.

Founded in 2011 and headquartered in Seattle, the firm develops software which measures, aggregates and analyzes the paths and places people visit in the real world, providing app developers with insights into how users interact with their products.

The new funding was led by Madrona Venture Group, with participation from Shane Atchison, CEO of WPP's Possible Worldwide; and Placed founder David Shim, who worked previously at Quantcast, WebTrends, Farecast and aQuantive.

Madrona's MD Matt McIlwain joins the Placed board and comments: 'Placed is at the intersection of two major trends - location information powered by smart devices and big data analytics. Under David Shim's leadership, Placed already has a world-class team and a strong position in Location Analytics.'

Shim says his team has been working 'heads down' for twelve months on its first offering, Placed for Developers, which to date has 'processed 851 million raw locations' and from today will accept requests for access from App Developers via www.placed.com/beta . The service is positioned as 'complementing the existing ecosystem of mobile analytics' by focusing not on the app itself but on what occurs outside it, in the real world.

Eatherly was previously Director of Client Services at Quantcast, where she built out and managed the client services group. In addition to hiring her, Placed has promoted Nick Gerner to Director of Engineering.
