451 Group Buys Data Center Think Tank

In the US, IT research and analyst firm The 451 Group has acquired The Uptime Institute, a think tank consultancy which has developed a system for comparing data center facilities. Terms were not disclosed.

Kenneth BrillThe 451 Group's analysts provide insight into the emerging technology market. In 2005, the firm acquired Tier1 Research, which serves third-party data center organizations, as well as financiers and suppliers in the data center market.

The Uptime Institute, which was founded almost two decades ago by Kenneth Brill, focuses on data center efficiency and reliability, and support for data center professionals.

'We speak to hundreds of data center operators every year, who know that utilization, power management and uninterrupted service delivery are key to their success,' stated Tier Research's VP and Research Director Dan Goulding. 'The design and operational best practices of the Uptime Institute are critical to ensuring success in these areas.'

On completion of the deal, Uptime's 25 employees will join the 85 staff at The 451 Group. Brill will step down from his management and operational leadership role, while continuing to provide guidance and act as a spokesman for the organization.

W. Pitt Turner IV, who currently leads the Uptime Institute Professional Services business, has been appointed Executive Director, Uptime Institute. He will report to Martin McCarthy, CEO of The 451 Group.
